Photo Story - Mr. Petersen
Kyle Petersen has worked at Saint Mary’s Hall, a private high school in San Antonio, for the past seven years. He dedicates his class time to teaching his students about photography, digital imaging, and much more, all while establishing a meaningful relationship with them. Every year, Mr. Petersen is proud of the work his students turn in and he is excited to see what their creative minds come up with next.

Part of Mr. Petersen's job is to not only teach his students the basics of photography and Photoshop, but also to teach them about their cameras, especially when they are not working as they should.

A proud teacher, Mr. Petersen smiles as he reflects on the final projects his students turned in. He looks forward to seeing what their creative minds come up with next.

Mr. Petersen's predecessor, Mr. Ralph Howell, unfortunately, passed away a couple of years ago. The beloved teacher's memory lives on in his old classroom.

During the quarantine, Mr. Petersen and the other art teachers decided to form a band. Today, they play for their students every year during the talent show, and Mr. Petersen keeps his guitar in his classroom.

Mr. Petersen continues his seventh year at Saint Mary's Hall and he likes to take polaroids of his students on their first and last days of class to commemorate their time in his class. His room is overflowing with these photos.

Saint Mary's Hall is a college preparatory school located in San Antonio, TX. Besides focusing on a strict curriculum, the school embraces creativity and includes a variety of fine arts classes.

Kyle Petersen is the photography teacher at Saint Mary's Hall. He likes to show off his students' work and teaches them how to mat their photos.

In order to really teach the freshmen how to take photos, Mr. Petersen has built into his curriculum a dark room section. Here, students have to learn to operate a film camera as well as the process of developing their photos.

Mr. Petersen's room is full of random objects that hold sentimental value but also show his students that he truly is a fun guy.

Mr. Petersen encourages his students to show their fun and creative sides. He does this by making them use obscure objects as the subject of his photos, here he holds a student's chicken figurine that they took from their mom's kitchen.

Mr. Petersen keeps a collection of books and cameras all over his classroom. He also hangs his favorite photos of his students a week before graduation on his "wall of fame."
